In my 20+ years of life, albeit short and still quite young, I have experienced a lot.
I have abandoned most of the things I’ve done in the past such as gymnastics, figure skating, horse riding, piano and the prospect of being a scientist.
I know I still have a long way to go and so much more to discover.
But I think I’ve somewhat figured out what one needs to remain consistent and steadfast in their endeavours.
1. Know Your Why
When we feel lost, it’s often not that we don’t know what to do.
It’s because we don’t know why we’re doing what we do.
And the reason we don’t think about this is because society has told us to do certain things and just obey.
In schools, we’re told what to do and what not to do.
If we ask why—only a brief vague answer is given before brushing the question off or scolding us for asking too many questions.
So we stopped questioning and carried the despondency into our adult lives.
We take on jobs that we don’t like just because society says it will lead to financial stability.
We try a new diet or fitness routine because society says it would be good for us.
But is society right? What do we think? Why are we doing all of this? To what end?
It can be tiresome to think too much of the why. But it’s worth it in the end.
I thought a lot about why it was necessary for me to go vegan.
After some reading and research, I knew it’s important for me to go vegan because I don’t want to be a part of the factory farming industry that exploits animals. The second reason is to not see this Earth so badly destroyed, at least not in my lifetime.
Holding on to my whys have kept me on this path for more than 4 years now.
This shows that a strong reason keeps you going for much longer than just doing it because it’s a social trend.
2. Nourish Your Body
The second key to success is keeping your body healthy.
Your body is a temple that holds your soul and everything that makes you YOU.
If you don’t treat it well, you won’t feel well.
We know from science that keeping the body healthy be it through exercise or diet would lead to a healthy mind. The brain is part of the body after all.
And when our minds are sound, we’re able to perform our daily tasks better.
We can be in optimum shape for our next sports game or be in sharp mind for our next debate.
Eating a wholefoods plant-based diet has helped me achieve clarity.
The more I take my nutrition seriously and not eating too much junk food, the better my mind is.
And once I’ve taken care of my health, I can be fully present to help others along their vegan journey, write thoughtful articles and create a choreography piece.
Oh and side note, whether you’re vegan or not, remember to take vitamin B12 or B complex!
So nourish yourself with wholesome foods to be at your best!
3. Network and Learn
You need people in your life.
I repeat: you need people in your life.
As much as some human beings can be annoying, we are still very much social creatures who need one other to thrive.
Sure we can live alone. But we wouldn’t live the full human experience.
I thought that I could do everything by myself. That I could achieve my dreams without anyone’s help.
But that soon proved to be flawed and I realised that I need help.
For example, if I want to build my credibility in copywriting, I’d need to build my portfolio. And to do so, I’d need to work with clients i.e. people. For them to trust my work, I need to show that I can be trusted. And that’s where networking comes in.
As for going on a vegan journey, it’s always better if you have like-minded friends to guide you. People who have gone through what you’re going through. It would give us a sense of comfort to know that we’re not alone in trying to make this world a better and more liveable place.
Generally, we need to build two kinds of network:
We need people to guide us in our social or everyday life endeavours and we need people to help us advance in our chosen careers.
I didn’t state “personal” because I think that all kinds of networks are personal, even social. Whatever relationships you have with people, it’s bound to impact you personally.
Another thing is learning.
It’s inevitable that we learn new things while networking. We learn to understand different kinds of people and we learn what they teach us.
So build your network, seek help when needed, get a mentor to advance in your career and embrace lifelong learning.
Motivation only gets you started. Habits and system keep you going.
You need habits to augment the three key items we just discussed.
There are many ways you can build your habit and system the way that suits you. But the general rule is to:
- set deadlines
- write down your to-dos
- schedule your daily activities
- set a timer for each focused work
- take breaks and reward yourself accordingly
Nothing worthwhile is easy.
So keep going and work on turning your vision into reality.
